Chapter 23: Silver-Level Instance, Foes Cross Paths!
"Lin Han, I’ll talk to you later—my mom’s here. See you tomorrow."
With those words, the line went dead, the droning tone filling the silence.
Lin Han couldn’t help but laugh, nostalgia welling up in him for the days he used to run wild with Wang Qiang. Though they had only been apart for a short while, these past few days had felt like years. So much had happened—far too much.
After sending Wang Qiang the time and place for tomorrow and tossing his phone aside, Lin Han closed his eyes. Even though, as a second-tier awakened, he could go days without sleep, mental exhaustion could never truly be erased.
The next day arrived.
Lin Han was up early, washed and dressed, and used a small teleportation array to head to the location of the Silver Dungeon. After waiting a moment, Wang Qiang showed up at the meeting spot.
Wang Qiang slung an arm over Lin Han’s shoulders with a mischievous grin. “Let me have a look, Lin Han—see if you’ve been worn out by all this.”
“Get lost. Go bother someone else,” Lin Han replied, rolling his eyes. They bantered as they made their way toward the ticket checkpoint.
Suddenly, a voice called out to them.
“Well, well—isn’t this our school’s number one?”
Gao Chong appeared, flanked by a group of followers. He sneered, “Didn’t expect to run into you here. Don’t tell me even a Life Priest needs to grind levels?”
“Gao Chong, don’t start trouble for no reason,” Lin Han replied coldly, not bothering to be polite.
“Pathetic. Who said you could speak?” Gao Chong spat.
Ever since Lin Han had become a Life Priest, the former top student of their school had become nothing more than an ant in Gao Chong’s eyes. He no longer needed to speak meekly in front of Lin Han. Now, he could step all over him, letting him taste the humiliation he himself once endured.
“Enough, Gao Chong!” Wang Qiang stepped in front of Lin Han. He would never let anyone insult his brother.
Gao Chong snorted. “Wang Qiang, you’d better team up with someone worthwhile. Bringing Lin Han along will only drag you down—he’ll slow your progress and waste your time.” He gestured proudly to the group behind him. “Take a good look—these are all Silver-level grinding teams. Their efficiency and safety are top-notch. With your burden, I can already predict how things will end for you.”
Wang Qiang was about to retort, but Lin Han stopped him with a gesture. Seeing the duo had no desire to continue the conversation, Gao Chong gave a cold grunt and swaggered into the trial grounds with his so-called elites.
“Lin Han, why didn’t you let me argue with him?” Wang Qiang fumed.
Lin Han shrugged, smiling. “Why waste energy on someone like him? When the entrance exams come, we’ll see who’s truly capable. Right now, it’s just a waste of time.”
Wang Qiang considered this and agreed.
Lin Han then took out their admission passes, and together they entered the trial grounds.
“This place feels like an ancient battlefield,” Wang Qiang remarked, scanning the surroundings. A sense of unease permeated the air. “Lin Han, stay behind me. Don’t worry—today, I’ll protect you.”
Lin Han said nothing.
Suddenly, his senses exploded with a warning of danger.
“Watch out!”
He shoved Wang Qiang out of the way and retreated as well. In the spot where Wang Qiang had just been standing, corpses burst from the earth.
“Damn!” Wang Qiang’s heart pounded—if Lin Han hadn’t pushed him, things could have gotten ugly.
“These monsters are nothing like the ones in the beginner village,” Wang Qiang muttered, conjuring a flurry of cards in his hand. Instantly, elemental energy surged across the ancient battlefield.
“Is that so?” Lin Han barely reacted—no matter what monsters appeared, nothing so far could withstand his forbidden spells.
“Wang Qiang, behind you!”
As they spoke, a corpse soldier was nearly upon Wang Qiang’s back. He spun and threw a punch, but the monster merely staggered and charged again. As a Card Master, Wang Qiang wasn’t skilled at close combat; he fired a card and quickly retreated to gain distance.
“So tough?” Even after unleashing a Flame Card, the corpse soldier still pressed on, claws reaching for him.
At that moment, Lin Han stepped in front, launching a punch that sent the creature’s head flying with a sonic boom.
“Are you alright?” Lin Han asked with concern.
Wang Qiang was stunned.
What had he just witnessed? Lin Han had punched the monster’s head clean off! Was that even humanly possible? And Lin Han’s class was supposed to be a healer!
True, Wang Qiang wasn’t a warrior, but as a Card Master—a combat class—his overall stats should have far outstripped Lin Han’s. Yet his own punches barely fazed the monsters, while Lin Han, the healer, ended a fight with a single blow.
Could it have been luck? As Wang Qiang pondered, another corpse soldier rushed them. Again, Lin Han stepped forward and dispatched it with ease.
“Lin Han, are you really a Life Priest?” Wang Qiang finally couldn’t hold back his doubts.
“Of course,” Lin Han replied with a smile. Admittedly, for a Life Priest, his power was a bit daunting—but it was less attention-grabbing than unleashing a forbidden spell.
“Maybe the system misclassified you,” Wang Qiang muttered. “How can a healer have such combat strength? You’ve really shocked me. Sometimes I suspect you’re actually a warrior.”
Lin Han met Wang Qiang’s gaze and laughed, easing the tension. “What, can’t your brother just be in good shape?”
“Good shape is an understatement,” Wang Qiang grumbled. Still, everyone had secrets—he didn’t press for details.
“Thunder Descent!” Wang Qiang suddenly raised his arms.
“Esteemed Lord of Thunder, grant this land your boundless lightning—guide the thunder down! Your faithful believe in you, Lord of Thunder! Purge this place of sin!”
Lightning answered Wang Qiang’s summons, lashing down as the ancient battlefield became a storm of chaos. Had Wang Qiang ever witnessed Lin Han’s Chaos Domain, he would have understood what true thunder warriors were capable of. In comparison, Thunder Descent was nothing more than a child’s trick.
“Oh, mighty Lord of Thunder! Wash away their sins, punish them!”
