Chapter 21: The Joy of Spending and Entry Rights to the City
After Lin Han left the Job Change Hall, he headed straight to the trading market. Now that the entire city was under lockdown and no one was allowed to leave, leveling up was out of the question. Although there were some trial grounds within the city, given his current status, he had no access to those places.
At this moment, Lin Han couldn't help but feel that he was suffering the consequences of his own actions.
Upon arriving at the trading center, it took only a few minutes before the manager who had previously assisted him came out to greet him.
"Mr. Lin, I didn't expect you to return so soon."
Lin Han replied, "Manager Liu, I'm here to make some purchases."
Hearing that this important client was here to shop, Manager Liu became even more enthusiastic. "Please, Mr. Lin, come inside. I'll have someone bring the product catalog right away."
Soon after, Lin Han followed Manager Liu to a VIP lounge, settled comfortably into a leather sofa, crossed his legs, and waited for the list of goods to arrive.
By now, Lin Han was thoroughly enjoying the pleasure of spending money lavishly.
Indeed, only those with wealth and influence could receive the best service.
The main reason he had come to the trading market was because he knew it would be impossible to level up for the foreseeable future, so he needed to prepare for the upcoming Academy Entrance Examination.
There were few restrictions for the entrance exam, so in order not to reveal too much of his true power, it was only prudent to prepare some magic scrolls.
Before long, Manager Liu returned with the product list.
Lin Han quickly made a selection, choosing some magic scrolls that weren't too extravagant, and completed his purchase with a swipe of his card, bringing the process to a perfect conclusion.
"Manager Liu, I have a piece of heirloom equipment here. I wonder if you might be interested."
Lin Han placed a bracer on the table. Having already worked with Manager Liu before, Lin Han now felt more at ease with him; at the very least, this scholarly-looking man had no ill intentions.
Besides, in their last transaction, Manager Liu had offered a very generous price.
"This is an epic-tier piece of equipment," Manager Liu began, examining it carefully. Although not as valuable as the legendary gear from last time, epic-tier items still commanded considerable worth.
In the entire city of Glimmermoon, epic-tier equipment had yet to make an appearance.
"This is an excellent piece," Manager Liu commented after a moment. "While it can't quite compare to the legendary items from before, it's certainly top-tier among epic equipment."
Lin Han smiled. "Of course. This has been passed down in my family for generations. Its quality is unquestionable. Were it not for my family's recent decline, I would never have brought it out for trade."
Manager Liu chuckled lightly; he didn't believe a word of Lin Han's story. Anyone who could produce legendary equipment couldn't possibly come from a modest background or lack means.
Furthermore, just yesterday he had sold two pieces of legendary gear, and today he brought out an epic item. Declining family fortunes? Who would believe that?
Besides, perhaps others might not notice anything special about Lin Han, but Manager Liu could see it clearly—this young man was wearing a legendary mage robe. While the specifics were unclear, its grade was certainly nothing to scoff at.
Of course, the origins of this equipment were none of his concern. Now that Lin Han had established such an excellent business relationship with him, if there were more pieces in the future, he would naturally be the first person Lin Han would think of.
For him, securing a major client was all that mattered.
"I wonder what price you had in mind for this item," Manager Liu probed.
"I'm not looking to sell it," Lin Han replied. "I'd like to trade it for something else."
"To trade?" Manager Liu asked, almost self-deprecating. "In this entire trading market, I'm afraid nothing surpasses this except for the two legendary items you sold yesterday."
"I need a Source of Calamity."
"A Source of Calamity?" Manager Liu gave a wry smile. "Mr. Lin, the rarity of a Source of Calamity far exceeds the value of an epic item. Besides, our trading market doesn't have one in stock."
"Perhaps our headquarters in the Imperial Capital might have one, but a single epic item would not be enough to trade for it."
Lin Han paused, ready to give up, when Manager Liu suddenly added, "However, there will soon be an auction here in Glimmermoon. With the two treasures you consigned to us, the event is bound to attract a great deal of attention—even the major families from the capital will likely be present."
"At this auction, there will be information about a Source of Calamity. But it's just information, not the item itself. Using an epic piece to obtain only a lead on the Source of Calamity seems a bit of a loss for you, Mr. Lin."
Lin Han considered this carefully.
At present, he possessed only one Source of Calamity.
But to undergo a third job change, he needed two.
The reason the Source of Calamity was so rare was because calamities didn't occur at will. The last time he had triggered two by coincidence was when he unleashed forbidden spells. Not even in the underground city had he managed to induce one.
While he could keep casting forbidden spells to cause disasters, Glimmermoon City could hardly withstand another such catastrophe.
Last time, the flood alone nearly destroyed the Wall of Life.
If the devastation were any greater, it would endanger the safety of the citizens.
Even in pursuit of greater power, he could not bring himself to do such a thing.
After a moment's thought, Lin Han said, "If all I get for this epic heirloom is a lead on the Source of Calamity, I simply can't agree. This item has been in my family for generations."
While the Source of Calamity was rare, mere information about its whereabouts was far less valuable. The depths of a disaster zone were not for ordinary experts, and for those who could survive them, the Source itself held little value.
Even though Lin Han could exponentially amplify his equipment, acting too extravagantly would easily arouse suspicion and bring him no benefit.
"You are quite right, Mr. Lin," Manager Liu replied. "Our trading market can offer you a portable personal teleportation array and an entry permit for a silver-ranked dungeon within the city."
A silver-ranked permit?
Lin Han's eyes widened with surprise.
Now that the city was locked down, the few silver-ranked dungeons inside were accessible only to people of very high status.
With the city sealed off and nowhere to train, this dungeon permit was invaluable to him!
