At nine that evening, Xie Yu returned.

The first thing he noticed was the strange sensation on his lips, and his expression instantly turned ugly.

“He kissed you again.”

Si Jiu was sitting on the sofa, scrolling through her phone. Xie Yu sat to her left, while a chilly presence nestled against the hollow of her neck on the right. Even without looking, she knew Qi Yan was clinging to her.

She tossed her phone aside and beckoned to Xie Yu. He immediately opened his arms and pulled her into his embrace.

That left the ghost Qi Yan nowhere to “make a move.”

His voice was muffled. “He broke his promise, so I don’t have to keep mine anymore.”

Si Jiu tilted her head back to look at him. “What are you planning to do?”

“I won’t voluntarily give up my time anymore.”

His eyes were cold. “I’ll take the medication Dr. Wen prescribed for me.”

That had originally been the condition he agreed to when he made his promise to Charles. But now he intended to break it.

They were not so easy to deal with, Si Jiu thought.

When Xie Yu saw that she remained silent, displeasure suddenly welled up inside him. He hooked a finger beneath her chin and stared into her eyes.

“Would you be reluctant to part with me?”

Si Jiu looked innocent. “Reluctant to part with what?”

Xie Yu stared at her for a long while. His fingertips rubbed her lips unconsciously, and then he suddenly smiled.

“Nothing.”

There was a faint, almost crazed possessiveness in that smile, making Si Jiu frown.

He no longer discussed the matter of their personalities with her. Instead, he lowered his head and devoted himself to teasing her.

…

From that night onward, Xie Yu maintained as much conscious awareness as possible. He took his medication on schedule with all three meals and went to Dr. Wen for treatment at the appointed times.

He spent very little time sleeping.

Perhaps even in sleep, his subconscious retained a sufficient degree of vigilance. The slightest disturbance would wake him.

And, astonishingly, his two alternate personalities never appeared again.

On the surface, it seemed that everything was improving—peaceful and harmonious.

But Si Jiu did not believe things were truly so optimistic.

In fact, her suspicions were confirmed very soon.

After roughly half a month of calm, Xie Yu suddenly underwent a personality switch while fully conscious.

One second, he was smiling and chatting happily with Si Jiu over breakfast. The next, his expression abruptly changed.

“Your Highness… seeing you so happy with him makes me terribly sad.”

He rose, braced one hand against the table, and bent down to take Si Jiu’s hand, kissing the back of it.

“It’s been so long since I last saw you. Have you missed me, Your Highness?”

“Honestly, a little.” Si Jiu regarded him calmly.

“I’ve missed you terribly too.” He curved his lips into a smile. “Unfortunately, he refuses to keep his promise. Now, an even more terrifying monster is about to awaken.

“There’s nothing I can do anymore.

“I came here to tell you…”

He gazed intently at Si Jiu, his eyes gentle and sorrowful, as though this were their final farewell.

“I truly love you.”

Si Jiu’s heart stirred. She sensed what was coming.

“So, would you kiss me just once?”

Si Jiu did not move.

He gave a bitter smile and leaned toward her.

“Then allow me to disobey Your Highness one last time.”

He kissed her forehead. A tear slid from the corner of his eye.

“I love you.”

By the time the final syllable faded, he had already opened his eyes again—and the gaze within them belonged to Xie Yu.

He had appeared so suddenly, remained only briefly, and then vanished once more.

“How strange.” Xie Yu touched his chest, then brushed a hand over the corner of his eye.

Si Jiu asked, “What is it?”

“It feels…” He pointed to his heart. “As though there are many emotions here that did not originally belong to me.”

Si Jiu’s eyes flickered. “Charles merged with you of his own accord.”

Or, more precisely, Charles had given up on himself and chosen to cease existing.

As the dominant personality, Xie Yu could never inherit all of his emotions and memories. However, some feelings were too intense and too deeply rooted to be erased. They had therefore fused into the dominant personality’s memories.

System: I turned away for one second and burst into tears. QAQ

Why did he make such a choice?

Was it because he believed he could not defeat any of the other personalities? Rather than being erased without a trace, he had chosen to merge voluntarily, leaving behind at least a fragment of himself.

Or was it because he feared Xie Yu would be unable to defeat Xiu, and that I would be sad?

System: I choose the second possibility.

Charles truly is a warm and healing presence.

“What are you thinking about?”

Si Jiu paused briefly. “Nothing. Let’s eat.”

Xie Yu touched her forehead, gave a low hum, and sat back down to continue eating.

His lashes lowered, concealing his thoughts.
