Chapter Fourteen: Restraint
Inside the command room, the count and his subordinates were still engaged in discussion. After Kanna’s departure, a certain quietude settled over the place. Everyone seemed lost in thought.
“Do you believe what my nephew said?” the count asked, glancing toward the woman seated in the corner.
Yara lifted her head. “If even a royal like yourself is uncertain, how could I possibly know? Since he said it so plainly, why not send someone to test it out, to ask around?”
The count considered this and nodded. It was hardly a troublesome task. “Bring one of those mercenaries he mentioned earlier—any one of them—and question him.”
Then he turned to Yara. “I recall ordering some vampires captured for you?”
Yara nodded. “Don’t worry. Two are still alive. I’ll bring one over.”
With that, she rose and left the command room.
“This matter is likely true, but the question is, could the Fourth Prince have really escaped all the way here from the capital?” Jorden, the count’s adjutant, inquired. He and the count had previously visited the capital and met princes of various ages. He also handled much intelligence from the capital.
In his impression, the Fourth Prince was the most inconspicuous and incompetent of them all. According to the count’s understanding of the royal family, someone like the Fourth Prince was hardly worthy of knowing the true aims of the dynasty.
Yet now, the Fourth Prince had fought his way here all the way from the capital while being pursued.
“He may not be strong, but he carries the aura of a warrior,” said Nado, captain of the knight guard.
The count nodded in agreement. “Compared to a few years ago, he has changed tremendously—I almost didn’t recognize him.”
“Ha! That’s what it means to be a man, forged in blood and fire,” boomed Udo with his thick beard, laughing heartily.
No one paid him any mind.
Soon, a knight entered the command room with Niken. Before questioning began, Yara returned, accompanied by two guards who were holding a blood slave bound in chains.
“Soldier, your name?”
Niken looked extremely nervous, lowering his head. “My lord, my name is Niken.”
“I heard you came here with the Fourth Prince?”
At that, Niken hastily replied, “I don’t know! Forgive me—I truly didn’t know he was a prince. I’ve been disrespectful; please forgive my sins!”
Though he had not offended the prince on the road, it was clear he showed no reverence either. When they realized their enemy was after Kanna, he immediately wanted to flee.
If a few ghouls had not also attacked them, they might have escaped.
“Enough. Raise your head, soldier. Summon your courage—I am not here to punish you.”
There was a tone of authority in the count’s voice.
Niken nodded quickly, grateful.
“Tell me, how did you meet the prince, and what did you experience along the way?”
The others in the command room listened as Niken recounted how he met Kanna and their journey afterward. They occasionally asked questions, seeking details.
After hearing it all, the count nodded with satisfaction. “You are a brave soldier, and I admire that. I permit you to join my army. You shall be made a squad leader, empowered to command a small team.”
He then turned to his captain of guards. “Give them one gold coin each. This is a reward for their courage and duty.”
“Thank you, my lord,” Niken said gratefully.
“All right, you may leave.”
Once Niken had departed, all eyes turned to the blood slave tightly bound in chains.
The blood slave looked at everyone in the room, expressionless as ever, his face pale and tinged with blue.
Yet it was clear he was in very poor condition, his body so emaciated he seemed little more than skin and bones.
“How did he end up like this? When I captured him, he didn’t look so miserable,” Udo asked, puzzled.
“He needs blood and flesh, but I dislike that, so I starve him,” Yara said without a hint of concern.
She then opened her hands, revealing in one a silver dagger that looked freshly forged.
In the other, she held a small half bottle of sharp grass juice taken from Niken.
She dragged the dagger across the blood slave’s arm.
The wound opened like butter cut by a hot knife, the flesh around it melting away.
This kind of attack seemed particularly effective against vampires. The blood slave’s eyes widened, his once-stony expression suddenly vivid.
“Ahhhh!”
He screamed hoarsely in pain, struggling violently against the tightly bound chains.
Yara then dripped some of the juice onto her finger and applied it to the blood slave’s other arm.
This time, the skin reacted as if touched by acid, instantly blistering and appearing to rot.
Only a small amount of juice was used, affecting just the outer layer of skin.
Yet the blood slave’s screams grew even more pitiful, his struggles more desperate.
“This effect is much stronger than we expected. It’s the first time I’ve seen blood slaves who fear neither death nor pain suffer so much,” said the count thoughtfully.
With the facts before them, the information Kanna brought was indeed very valuable.
After a moment’s reflection, the count said, “Coat all the knights’ swords with silver, and have the lower ranks collect sharp grass to press into juice.”
“What will you do with the Fourth Prince?” adjutant Jorden asked.
“Send him to Riverbend Town.”
He explained, “If he has no issues, his strength means it would be better for him to stay far from the front lines.
And if he does have problems, then being far from the front lines is even better.”
...
Elsewhere, at last, there was a place to rest safely.
Kanna, in the bathroom of his room, finally experienced the comfort of a hot bath.
He washed away the grime of the road and lay down on a proper wooden bed.
Lying there, he felt the fatigue; after all the traveling, he could finally rest for a while.
